Źródło polskich terminów w angielskich słownikach.

Dyskutując o polskich nazwach terminów angielskich zakładamy, że w US i UK jest pełna jednoznaczność jaka jest definicja każdego z terminów, co opisuje i czego dotyczy. Co więcej nie dopuszczamy do świadomości różnic językowych pomiędzy językami angielskimi: brytyjskim (UK), amerykańskim (US) oraz biznesowym (BE), a one istnieją.

Spróbujmy zajrzeć do kilku słowników, dostępnych w sieci:

Merriam-WEBSTER - najstarszy z 1828 roku słownik amerykańskiej (US) odmiany języka angielskiego.

CAMBRIDGE Dictionary – wydawany przez Cambridge University prezentuje definicje terminów w języku brytyjskim (UK), amerykańskim (US) i biznesowym (BE) oraz ma tłumaczenie na kilka innych języków, w tym na polski (PL).

OXFORD Dictionary – słownik języka angielskiego w wersji brytyjskiej (UK) oraz skrócony w wersji amerykańskiej (US) z Oxford University Press, przy czym istnieją różne wersje tych słowników: dla uczniów, akademików,… z nieco odmiennymi definicjami pojęć.

COLLINS Dictionary – Słownik brytyjskiej (UK) odmiany języka angielskiego  publikowany przez wydawnictwo HarperCollins z siedzibą w Glasgow, (  )

Encyclopedia Britannica – angielskojęzyczna encyklopedia powszechna wydana po raz pierwszy w latach 1768–1771 w Edynburgu, a od 1901 wydawana w Stanach Zjednoczonych, a od 2012 tylko w wersji online.

Do analizy weźmiemy pięć podstawowych terminów: computing, computer science, information science, information technology oraz ICT.

Computing

WEBSTER (nie definiuje computing, ale tylko czasownik compute) - to determine or calculate by means of a computer (US).

CAMBRIDGE - the study or use of computers (UK) - the use of computers (US) -  the activity, study, or job of using computers (BE) - the study or use of computers: informatyka (PL).

OXFORD - the use or operation of computers. (UK/US).

COLLINS - is the activity of using a computer and writing programs for it (UK/US} - means relating to computers and their use (UK/US) - informatyka (PL).

Widzimy jak różne są to definicje mówiące o tym samym. Brytyjskie uwzględniają studiowanie, biznesowe pracę z wykorzystaniem komputerów. COLLINS wspomina jeszcze o pisaniu programów. A tłumaczeniem na polski jest - informatyka.

Tutaj dla uzupełnienia tego pojęcia przytaczam poniżej jeszcze definicję ACM oraz JTF z 2005 roku, jak rozumieją computing. Według tej definicji to pojęcie obejmuje wszystko co może być efektywnie zautomatyzowane.

The ACM Computing Curricula 2005 defined "computing" as follows: In a general way, we can define computing to mean any goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting from, or creating computers. Thus, computing includes designing and building hardware and software systems for a wide range of purposes; processing, structuring, and managing various kinds of information; doing scientific studies using computers; making computer systems behave intelligently; creating and using communications and entertainment media; finding and gathering information relevant to any particular purpose, and so on. The list is virtually endless, and the possibilities are vast."

The fundamental question underlying all computing is "What can be (efficiently) automated?"

Computer science

WEBSTER - a branch of science that deals with the theory of computation or the design of computers (US).

CAMBRIDGE - the study of computers and how they can be used (US/UK) - the study of computers, how they work, and how to make use of them (BE) - the study of computers and how they can be used: informatyka (PL).

OXFORD - the study of the principles and use of computers (UK/US).

COLLINS - the study of computers and their application (UK) - informatyka (PL).

Tutaj pomimo różnic w pojęciach mamy wyróżnione studiowanie (naukę o teorii obliczeń - tylko w US) o tym czym jest i jak mogą być używane komputery. Tłumaczeniem na polski jest - informatyka.

Information science

WEBSTER - the collection, classification, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of recorded knowledge treated both as a pure and as an applied science (US).

CAMBRIDGE - mainly: informatics (UK) - the study of collecting, organizing, storing and using electronic information (BE only).

OXFORD - the study of processes for storing and retrieving information, especially scientific or technical information(US) - the study of processes for storing and retrieving information (UK).

COLLINS - the science of the collection evaluation, organization, and dissemination of information, often employing computers (UK) - the science dealing with the efficent collection, storage, and retrieval of information (US) - informacja naukowa (PL).

I znowu w UK mamy studia o procesach przetwarzania informacji, gdy w US tylko samo przetwarzanie informacji. Tłumaczenie  na PL jest nieprawidłowe, gdyż wtedy powinno być science information. Ciekawe jest za to odniesienie ze słownika CAMBRIDGE do pojęcia informatics - zobaczymy więc jak jest ono definiowane.

Informatics

WEBSTER - information science (Origin and Etymology) information + -ics

OXFORD (treated as singular) the science of processing data for storage and retrieval; information science.

CAMBRIDGE information science (mainly US as IT) - information science (BE)

COLLINS (functioning as singular) another term for information science (UK) - informatyka (PL).

Jak widać powraca się do pojęcia information science, a więc w zasadzie w PL powinno to być również informatyka - no może  informatyka informacyjna albo technika informacyjna, dla ich odróżnienia.

Information technology (IT)

WEBSTER - the technology involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data (US).

CAMBRIDGE - the science and activity of using computers and other electronic equipment to (UK/US) store and send  information (UK/US) - the science and activity of using computers and software to store and send information (BE) - the use of computers and other electronic equipment to store and send information - informatyka (PL).

OXFORD -  the development, study, or use of electronic equipment, especially computers, for storing and analyzing information (US) - the study or use of electronic equipment, especially computers, for storing, accessing, analysing and sending information (UK) - the study or use of systems (especially computers and telecommunications) for storing, retrieving, and sending information.(US/UK).

COLLINS - is the theory and practice of using computers to store and analyse information (US) - the technology of the production, storage, and communication of information using computers and microelectronics (UK) - technologia informacyjna (PL).

Niby tak samo, ale nie identycznie i jednak znaczenia są nieco inne. Również różnica pomiędzy US a UK, a także BE. Tłumaczenie na polski - informatyka lub kolejno według pojedynczych słów.

ICT

WEBSTER (brak definicji) (US)

CAMBRIDGE [abbrev.:  information and communication technology]- a school subject in which students learn to use computers and other electronic equipment to store and send information (UK) - the use of computers and other electronic equipment and systems to collect, store, use, and send data electronically (BE) - the use of computers and other electronic equipment to store and send information – informatyka (PL).

OXFORD [abbrev: information and communications technology] - the study of the use of computers, the Internet, video, and other technology as a subject at school (UK).

COLLINS [abbrev:Information and Communications Technology] - refers to activities or studies involving computers and other electronic technology. 

Trzy ciekawostki: W US nie ma definicji ICT - nie istnieje, przynajmniej w odniesieniu do informatyki. A drugą jest różne rozwinięcie tego skrótu w słowie communication(s), że już o dużej literze nie wspomnę. I trzecia istotna ciekawostka to tłumaczenie CAMBRIDGE na PL - informatyka!

Nie podejmuję się szerszej analizy tego zestawienia, gdyż wymagałoby to studiów lingwistycznych oraz porównania jeszcze okresów, kiedy powstawały dane definicje terminów. Z informacji z witryn z tych słowników wynika, że praktycznie wszystkie są już kilkunastoletnie - gdyż jakby przestani je aktualizować. Nie wiadomo czym to jest spowodowane. W każdym razie postawiona na początku teza o różnicach języka angielskiego oraz odmiennych definicjach podstawowych pojęć potwierdza się. Jakie z tego powinniśmy wyciągnąć wnioski - pokaże czas dyskusji.
